Our last open studio weekend! Rick created another head. The goal is to keep practicing in 2011! We had amazing weather but our supporters showed up anyway. Thank you to all! See you in the new year!
We had a very special evening "good luck" party for Matt as he goes off to San Jose State to complete his degree in Art. The show of the evening was watching Matt complete this incredible goblet. We are very proud of him. He has been working with us for 9 years and hopefully, will still help out now and then. New helper? Luke LaRash.
The light outside is beautiful - soft and warm colors but with a chill in the air. That is a sign that it is time for the 17th Annual Autumn Art Studios Tour. Our 17th. This year there are 90 artists at 57 locations. A bit overwhelming, but you can preview work from each artist at the Arts Building, 808 Lincoln Way in Auburn. Buy a ticket and plan your path. Or start at our studio and pick up your tickets here. We will be blowing but come before 3 to see the best demos. Glass blowing can be a bit exhausting! Enjoy fresh hot local cider with us. Come if you can. We would love to see you and celebrate another Fall!
We recently installed this custom Twig Chandelier in a Sacramento dining room. It had a very special, personal touch - an oak leaf modeled from the tree she planted by seed in her front yard!
Yesterday I saw the Artstock Sculpture Exhibition with Large Format Paintings featuring Valley Sculpture Artists at High Hand in Loomis, CA and was very impressed! Sue Anne Foster did and incredible job integrating art with the ambiance of the historic fruit packing shed. It will be there from Oct 1 to Nov 7. Check it out!
"The pieces arrived safely and on time. They installed beautifully and the client is pleased." Trish Garrett Fox, Fine Art Matters Another installation complete - yeah!
What a fun day with Heather, Hannah, Wes, Matt and Lindsey! First, Birth of Impressionism at the De Young Museum in Golden Gate Park, Indian food lunch, then Fisher Collection at the MOMA. Finished just in time to experience Hot Glass Cold Beer at Public Glass with a great demonstration by Blaker-DeSomma from Santa Cruz. Home by midnight... Can't think of a better way to spend a day!
I am excited to have a photo of our new installation in a beautiful home in San Diego. We worked back and forth with color samples, photoshop and the homeowner even tried different layouts in cardboard cutouts! I love working back and forth with custom orders. Each one is a unique challenge!
Heather joined us for the weekend and she is the Queen of retail since she works retail on Pacific in Santa Cruz. We are grateful for her energy! I really appreciate the hard work of the ACGA organization - wonderful people and a visual feast.
We will be participating in the Palo Alto Clay and Glass Festival July 10, 11 from 10 to 5 at the Palo Alto Art Center on the corner of Embarcadero and Newell. It is a visual treat of clay and glass artists from Northern California. www.acga.net for more info - maps and artists. Should be fun! We are working hard on the booth and gardening too! More on that later...
The crazy trip is over. First, a beautiful drive down the Eastern Sierra to Las Vegas then over to Santa Monica for an opening reception at Adamm's Gallery, a wonderful drive up 101 through California - home one day - and off to Heather's graduation - Phi Beta Kappa UC Santa Cruz......now back to blowing through the summer heat which luckily hasn't really hit yet. Way too fast. Most photos were out the car window at 70 mph.....
We are excited, proud parents - our daughter, Heather, graduates with honors from UCSC on Saturday, June 12! I am reading her thesis and needed a break! She majored in Community Studies with a minor in Latin American Studies and worked in San Francisco at La Raza Central Legal with day laborers and domestic workers for her internship. She will stay in Santa Cruz for the summer and study for the LSAT in August. You never know what will come of this but a life adventure is ahead for her and for so many more young people who take on our troubled world.
Rick is pushing hard - but he leaves for a brief trip to Hawaii Wed so I don't feel very sorry for him. Big ten piece commisssion underway for the BMI lobby in New York City!
Don't Fence Me In! A peek at our bra for the Artful Bra Show Auction benefiting The American Cancer Society. Blown glass and barbed wire. Another creative adventure.
We have teepees in our pasture - just to keep life interesting! Matt's roommate has 14 and is practicing setting them up in our pasture. He is in LA with one now for the filming of a documentary. The visitors to our Open Studio weekend were fascinated!
North Auburn Art Studios coming up this weekend, May 8 and 9, 10 to 5. 10 artists, 8 studios. It will be a beautiful weekend! Lots of blowing, cleaning and yardwork going on.
Today was a beautiful, sunny day! A homeschool group came for a demo and enjoyed a picnic in the yard. The students were mesmerized. It is amazing to see how long the molten glass can hold their attention.
We are currently working on a chandelier from our Renewal Series - 56"H x 32"W. It will hang from a 20'ceiling in a home full of original contemporary Western art. The plan is to install in early May!
Co-Owner of Nicholson Blown Glass since 1979. Rick studied glass at the University of Southern California and was a TA at Pilchuck Glass School for Dale Chihuly and Fritz Dreisbach in 1981.
I left my photographer position at the USC in 1979 to freelance and create designs on Rick’s clay forms. We were married the same year, and our artistic collaboration began. By 1982, we concentrated on glassblowing and moved to nine acres in Auburn, California where we raised two daughters, now in college.
Our works involve figurative sculpture, sculptural lighting, and multiple piece wall and ceiling installations. Recent projects include a 10-piece wall for the BMI lobby in New York City; two wall installations for the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Shenzhen, China; a 21-piece wall installation for the lobby of Weil, Gotschal and Manges International Law Firm in Dallas, Texas; a 17- piece wall installation for Kaiser Hospital in Roseville, California; multiple glass and steel sculptures for M Resort in Henderson, NV and two Torsos for the 4 Points Hotel in Guangzhou, China. While Rick does the hand blown work, I am the color and design part of our collaboration.
